1. How old were you when you started playing soccer?
K. Quan: I started playing soccer when I was 14 years old
2. How did you get involved with soccer?
K. Quan: Jimmy Taitano, the girl’s high school soccer coach at JFK at the time encouraged me to try the sport in my sophomore year.
3. What positions have you played?
K. Quan:I started as a left wing midfielder for the national team then eventually moved to a more defensive role having played stopper and defensive center midfielder. I am currently training as a center defender.
4. Which position is your most favorite and least favorite? And why?
K. Quan:The center midfield position is my favorite because I have the flexibility to contribute to both the offensive and defensive aspects of the game. I do, however, appreciate and have great respect for the position that I am training for now, which is center defender.
5. How would you describe your experience on the national team?
K. Quan:It is humbling to be a part of the Women’s National Team. My love and passion for playing and learning the game keeps me motivated, but it is a different generation of players now and that can be a challenge.
6. What would you like to share with all the other female soccer athletes about playing soccer for the national team?
K. Quan:I’d like to share with all the other female soccer athletes that if you love the game of soccer and you are willing to work hard, it is a once in a life time experience to be able to travel and compete at the national level.
7. What is the best part about training?
K. Quan:The best part about training is working as team. When the team finally comes together after months of hard work and you can see the improvement, there’s a feeling that is was worth it all. Personally, I love feeling fit.
8. What is the hardest part about training?
K. Quan:The hardest part about training is meshing the different personalities and building a team that works together.
9. If you were to do it all over again, would you?
K. Quan: If I had to do it all over again, yes and yes.
10. What tips or secret ingredient would you give to others that desire to be on the national team?
K. Quan: There is no secret ingredient. For any athlete to want to compete at the national level, it takes the three D’s – Desire, Determination, and Dedication.
11. If you were a spokesperson for Guam Football Association Women’s Football and you need to give a speech to inspire your fellow female athletes, what would you say to promote soccer?
K. Quan: I have been part of GFA’s Women’s Football program for many years and in many different capacities. One thing I can say is that Soccer on Guam has exploded and there has been so much growth in the sport over the years. There is so much opportunity now that didn’t exist before and I would like to encourage female athletes to get involved in an area that interests them.
12. What is your fondest memory of playing soccer?
K. Quan: My fondest memory of playing soccer is the feeling that comes over me in every match that I start in when we line up as a team ready to enter the pitch and they play the FIFA anthem. It is an indescribable feeling of pride, humility and excitement. It happens in every match; I love it!
13. What has been your biggest disappointment in football?
K. Quan: The biggest disappointment in football is the obvious inequality of support between the Men’s and Women’s Programs.
14. What is your favorite type of music?
K. Quan: I enjoy easy listening music of the 70’s and 80’s.
15. Favorite book?
K. Quan: I don’t have a favorite but I enjoy reading different kinds of books – from authors like Mitch Albom to Nicholas Sparks to Dan Brown
16. Your favorite film?
K. Quan: My favorite film… I don’t have a particular favorite, but I enjoy movies that hit the heart like I Am Sam
17. Your favorite city?
K. Quan: My favorite city? I’ve spent most of my life on Guam, so I am an islander at heart. I don’t like the busy city life.
18. Favorite hobby?
K. Quan: My favorite hobby aside from soccer is reading in my free time.
19. Who has been the most influential figure to you?
K. Quan: The most influential figures to me are my children. Although parenting has its challenges, they are a true blessing and they are the biggest influence of the person I am today and what I want to be remembered for. They keep me going through the good times and most especially the not so good times.
20. What is your main strength?
K. Quan: My main strength is my work ethic. When I do things, I like to do it well.
21. What qualities do you appreciate?
K. Quan: I appreciate qualities such as integrity, sincerity, and honesty.
22. What are you afraid of?
K. Quan: I am afraid of flying bugs, the feeling of falling, and the deep open ocean…things I don’t recall being afraid of when I was a kid.
23. Who would you most like to meet?
K. Quan: I would like to have met Jesus.
24. Where do you see yourself in 3 years in regards to soccer?
K. Quan: Three years from now, I see myself possibly still coaching, still playing at the club level, and most of all, as a soccer mom to my two boys.
25. What are your goals/ambitions?
K. Quan: My goals and ambitions in the near future is obtaining my MA in Early Childhood Education and continue teaching or working with children.
